DIEVOLE (TUSCANY/SICILY)
DIEVOLE IS A HEAVYWEIGHT Tuscan azienda that has been around in some shape or form for the last 1,000 years. Located in Chianti Classico – the historical heartland of Chianti and source of the region’s most illustrious wines – its 411 hectares include just 86 that are devoted to vines, the bulk being given over to forests, olive groves and other crops. Dievole operates outside of its central Italian homeland, too, with its winery down south in Sicily producing a number of well-regarded brands.

BORGO MAGREDO (FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA)
FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA (usually shortened to “Friuli) is in the northeast of Italy, sandwiched between the sparkling Adriatic sea and the foothills of the eastern Alps. As with France’s Alsace, it is unusual within its country in that the wines are labelled by variety (i.e. the grape name is prominent on the front of the bottle), but it differs from its French fellow in that these varieties are often non-traditional for the region. So in Friuli we find plenty of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet, alongside local specialties like Friulano, Refosco and others. Friuli is often described as Italy’s best region for dry whites.

Borgo Magredo Sauvignon Blanc 2012 €14.99 €11.99 Save €3
Big nose of elderflower, capsicum and nettle, with a mouthwatering wash of grapefruit and gooseberry. Try with fish parcels with tomatoes and capers.
Borgo Magredo Pinot Grigio 2011 €14.99 €11.99 Save €3
Friuli’s most-planted grape, an easy drinking, round and fruity white.
Borgo Magredo Friulano 2011 €14.99 €11.99 Save €3
Friulano, a variety that is little seen outside north east Italy, has stayed beneath the radar of most drinkers, although the wine trade and press are hugely fond of it. Dry and minerally, with almond and floral characters, it pairs beautifully with chicken and fish.
Borgo Magredo Pinot Nero 2011 €14.99 €11.99 Save €3
A super chance to try elegant, midweight Italian Pinot Noir. This one is pale and tantalising, with tangy flavours of cranberry, cherry and rose petal.
Borgo Magredo Merlot 2011 €14.99 €11.99 Save €3
Varietal Merlot from pebble and gravel plots in the estate’s warmer vineyards. Medium bodied and dry, with blackcurrant, mint and spice notes. Good with herby lamb cutlets.
