Top 10 Whites of 2012

With the Christmas buying season contributing so heavily to overall sales, November and December can see some late movements in our top-sellers list for the year.
The list below is the top 10 white wines by retail sales for Curious Wines, January to December 2012 – that’s the number of bottles sold instore and online.
This is our definitive list of recommended whites – our top wines, as voted for by you.

1. The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2012: Now our top-selling wine two years running, the Ned has ceased to amaze us in it’s almost universal wow factor. In a category that should be becoming tired and old-hat, Brent Marris’s flagship has reset the benchmark for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
“I knew immediately it had enormous potential”, explained Brent. “Tucked between the Delta Hills and the Waihopai River the property flows over three distinct terraces of clays and ancient river shingles, providing the fruit variation and complexity that a winemaker can normally only dream of from a single vineyard.”

2. Mirabello Pinot Grigio 2011: Another wine with universal appeal, what it lacks in wow factor more than makes up for in consistent pleasure and ease of drinking. Think Rocha pear and a finish as clean as the Italian alps air.
3. Borgo Magredo Prosecco Frizzante: If Stella McCartney designed wine it’d be a Prosecco. The Borgo’s a real charmer: soft, ripe and fruity with medium fizz, but with an underlying richness and complexity that demands a second glass (or bottle, depending on your mood).
4. Cuvée Jean Paul Blanc Sec 2011: Once our top selling wine but only falling behind on the fashionista status of the wines currently above it. This is still stupendously good, a crisp,
aromatic blend from Gascony that punches way above it’s low price.
5. Santa Alicia Sauvignon Blanc 2012: Inexpensive Chilean Sauvi is easy to find, good varietal character at this price less so. Snappy grapefruit, sweet melon and tart gooseberry make for a clean, flavoursome wine that appeals to any and every palate.
6. Real Castelo Rueda Verdejo 2011: Spotted in a tapas bar in Madrid (we work tirelessly for our customers!), this quickly became a customer favourite last year. Subtle tones of banana, pineapple and passion fruit with a softness that makes it very palatable and oh so tasty.
7. Moulin de Gassac Classic Blanc 2011: This Sauvignon Blanc-based blend is less a crowd-pleaser but more a ‘wine drinker’s wine’, with floral and aromatic spices on the nose and an underlying complexity that reveals itself more and more with each sip.
8.  Santa Alicia Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2011: Fuller in body and flavour than the varietal version above, this comes alive with food, particularly seafood. Pineapple and melon provide the sweet fruit with a zesty lime zing making it crisp and clean on the finish.
9. Château Bauduc Bordeaux Blanc 2011: A white that would grace any dinner table, as Messrs Ramsay and Stein will atest. The 2011 has a greater ‘lift’ than previous vintages, expressing the fruit even more vibrantly. Oz Clarke loves it every vintage too, so it appears do you.
10. Santa Alicia Reserva Chardonnay 2011: Chardonnay’s back, as more and more people are discovering, and enjoying. Subtle French oak, mouthwatering tropical fruits and a soft, buttery texture lined with vanilla and spice, it’s classy stuff for the price.
We have our Top 10 white wines of 2012 available as a special mixed case – one of every wine above with an extra bottle of the top 2 to make a case of 12 – only €125 including delivery, with over €19 off the normal combined retail price.
