MALBEC IS A DARK-SKINNED GRAPE that is most associated with the high-altitude (up to 3,000 metres!), desert vineyards of Argentina’s Mendoza region. The variety is in fact originally from southwest France, where it is still widely cultivated today, especially in Cahors. But three-quarters of the world’s Malbec lives in Argentina, where it is the country’s most-planted grape. Unlike the Gallic expression, which can be tough and taciturn (sorry, France!), the South American version is unmistakably joyous: inky, high in alcohol, with brash, fruit-driven flavours, voluptuous body and velvety-smooth tannins. It’s a wine that’s impossible not to love and – if all that weren’t enough – the perfect partner for juicy steaks. Looks like Malbec ‘wins’ wine!
Three to try
Nieto ‘Don Nicanor’ Malbec 2011 (Mendoza, Argentina) €15.99 on promo
Inky appearance and a captivating nose of blackcurrants, mocha and pressed violets. The smooth, dense wash is deeply satisfying, and is reminiscent of black cherry confit, mulberry and bitter chocolate. Aerate for an hour and have with a blue cheese burger.
Ben Marco Malbec 2012 (Mendoza, Argentina) €15.99 on promo
Striking deep-purple hue with a brooding, serious nose of mulberry, soy and roasted coffee bean. Penetrating, grippy wash that shows blackberry, leather, cocoa and raspberry notes. Sinewy and muscular, with a savoury, moreish finish.
Bodega Vistalba ‘Tomero’ Malbec 2012 (Mendoza, Argentina) €13.99 on promo
Opaque and mysterious appearance, with a deep, smoky nose of macerated black fruit, milk chocolate and sweet spice. The mouth-coating, rich palate is heavy and powerful, with a real taste of more on the finish. Smooth enough to down on its own – good too with seared duck breast with honey, orange and thyme.
