SaleZ-Force is named in tribute to the Z Special Force, a special Australian Army unit created in World War II to operate behind enemy lines. Z-Force’s members were from many countries and specialised in unique guerrilla warfare, pioneering numerous operational techniques and tactics, many as daring as they were brilliant.
The fruit for Z Force is sourced from hand tended blocks in the Seaview Heights sub-region of McLaren Vale. The wine is aged in new and seasoned hogsheads and aged for 18 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration. Very dark, vibrant violet with a dense crimson hue, plum pudding and Christmas spices open on the nose with dried berries and a fresh lift of citrus peel. Rich and soft on entry with sweet macerated blackberries tempered by the spike of red citrus and cranberry notes, lush mouth-filling fruit with rolling soft, fine grained tannins, finishing with chocolate mint, cedar and caramelised grapefruit zest. Phwoar!
90% shiraz and 10% durif (aka petite syrah), open-fermented, matured in new and used French and American oak. McLaren Vale on steroids? That’s cruel, but this is as full-bodied and intense as a wine can be before becoming a caricature. Moreover, it’s the black ironstone fruit that’s so intense, not the tannins or the oak. The consequent balance means this wine can outlive most who lay it down now. 96 points.
