Txakoli (pronounced chak-ko-lee) is a wine of the Basque country in Spain’s far north between Logroño and Bilbao. The climate here is very different from other wine-growing regions in Spain, notoriously damp and humid with undulating mountains and valleys.

This delightful Txakoli rosé is made from the native white Hondarrabi Zuri grape, with the colour and unique taste profile coming from the addition of the native red Hondarrabi Beltza. Everything gets cold macerated together, before the skins are whisked off, with cool fermentation followed by two months on the lees to extract as much texture and flavour as possible.

Pale pink, limpid and bright in appearance, there’s white fruit and floral aromas from the Hondarrabi Zuri, with additional floral nuances and hints of berries and tropical fruits. Very fresh but quite supple on the palate, there’s a softness to the fruit and minerality to the mid-palate, sweet fruit flavours balanced by a cleansing acidity with citrus notes.

Keep this cool, ideally 5-7 degrees for serving and drinking. Perfect as an aperitif or ideal alongside fish, chicken or pork dishes.

Txakoli (pronounced chak-ko-lee) is a wine of the Basque country in Spain's far north between Logroño and Bilbao. The climate here is very different from other wine-growing regions in Spain, notoriously damp and humid with undulating mountains and valleys, making wine production very challenging here until modern skills and technology arrived in the 1990s.

Eugenio Álava began planting vineyards in 1988 in a bid to recover lost traditions of grape-growing in what is now the Arabako Txakolina DO, the smallest of the three recognised regions for Txakoli production in Spain. The indigenous grape accounting for 90% of production in the region is Hondarrabi Zuri, high in acidity and relatively low in alcohol. Starting with an initial 6 hectares, the family run farm grew to 20 hectares by 2005, when the construction of a new winery brought state of the art winemaking for the 21st century.

The small estate is situated in the Arrastaria-Orduña Valley at an altitude of 300m above sea level. It enjoys proximity to the Cantabrian Sea, and the valley is protected from the south by the Sierra Salvada (Gorobel in Basque), the impressive mountain range with limestone cliffs up to 500m high. The calcareous and clay alluvial soils of the valley provide the final elements of the unique terroir required to produce great Txakoli here at Artomaña.
