Description

Txakoli (pronounced chak-ko-lee) is a wine of the Basque country in Spain’s far north between Logroño and Bilbao. The climate here is very different from other wine-growing regions in Spain, notoriously damp and humid with undulating mountains and valleys.

Red wines make up only a small proportion of production here, and this is a red exhibiting many of the qualities of a Txakoli white: light, fruity, low in colour and very low tannins, it’s actually best served lightly chilled.

It’s made exclusively from the native Hondarrabi Beltza grape, produced the same way as the Xarmant whites: cold macerated with cool fermentation, followed by two months on the lees. Bright ruby-violet in colour with a summer fruit bowl on the nose, fresh cherries, red berries, with masses of floral action, lilac, rosehip and peonies. Crisp, fresh and vibrantly fruity on the palate, crunchy berries framed by a bracing acidity and the lightest of tannins, it’s delicious on a warm summer’s day.

Txakoli (pronounced chak-ko-lee) is a wine of the Basque country in Spain's far north between Logroño and Bilbao. The climate here is very different from other wine-growing regions in Spain, notoriously damp and humid with undulating mountains and valleys, making wine production very challenging here until modern skills and technology arrived in the 1990s.

Eugenio Álava began planting vineyards in 1988 in a bid to recover lost traditions of grape-growing in what is now the Arabako Txakolina DO, the smallest of the three recognised regions for Txakoli production in Spain. The indigenous grape accounting for 90% of production in the region is Hondarrabi Zuri, high in acidity and relatively low in alcohol. Starting with an initial 6 hectares, the family run farm grew to 20 hectares by 2005, when the construction of a new winery brought state of the art winemaking for the 21st century.

The small estate is situated in the Arrastaria-Orduña Valley at an altitude of 300m above sea level. It enjoys proximity to the Cantabrian Sea, and the valley is protected from the south by the Sierra Salvada (Gorobel in Basque), the impressive mountain range with limestone cliffs up to 500m high. The calcareous and clay alluvial soils of the valley provide the final elements of the unique terroir required to produce great Txakoli here at Artomaña.
