Vignedileo Piceno Sangiovese 2021

From the Palpacelli family vineyards in Staffolo, Sangiovese grapes are harvested at night, gently pressed and cool fermented in stainless steel tanks, with just a few months to round out before bottling. The emphasis here is very much on taming tannins in favour of big ripe fruit flavours, and they succeed wonderfully.

Vivacious ruby red in colour, this is intensely fruity on the nose, fresh cherries, blueberries and violets to the fore, with subtle savoury, herbal elements. The palate is fresh and fruity, well balanced with a refined tannic structure, cherries and blackberries with underlying hints of leather, prune and liquorice.

You can serve this lightly chilled, superb with tomato-based dishes, characuterie or antipasti.

We love going to places where a grape that's unknown or overlooked elsewhere in the world is treated with a reverence and adulation more akin to international celebrity. So it is with Verdicchio in Staffolo, the home of Vignedileo in Italy's Marche wine region. They've been growing Verdicchio here since Roman times, making the century the Cimarelli and Palpacelli families have been at it seem like they're upstarts.

Brothers Emanuele and Gianfilippo are the new generation of Palpacellis, taking over from their father Leonardo who passed away prematurely in 1999. Vignedileo literally translates as 'Leo's winery'.

As well as the prized white Verdicchio dei Castelli, the family also produces red wines from Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. Sustainability is at the heart of everything they do, from organic fertilisation and technical innovations to reduce CO2 emissions in the vineyard, to careful water management and solar powering the winery.

You just have to try Verdicchio.
