Verdone Vermentino di Toscana 2021

19.00

Description

Verdone (‘greenfinch’) is named after the small green bird that frequents the vineyards of this small family estate in Tuscany, the yellow-green flashes in its feathers similar to the lemon-lime reflections from this Vermentino.

Steel fermented and bottled while young, the nose is expressive and elegant marked by floral notes of elderflower, peach blossom and lychee. Crisp and refreshing on the open, salty and mineral characteristics support an opulent mid-palate loaded with melon, pear and stone-fruit, finishing with cut lime and a wisp of aniseed. This is very, very tasty.

Serve as an aperitif or with anything fishy, herby or citrussy, it goes particularly well with prosciutto.

Il Muro estate has been owned by the Pancaro family for more than two centuries. In the 17th century, poet Francesco Redi, whose villa can be admired on the side of Poggio Mendico, celebrated the vineyards and the wines of this area, describing them as blood-red, gold-red, sparkling, bright and spicy in his well-known poem “Bacchus in Tuscany”.

Situated in the very heart of Tuscany, a few miles from the medieval city of Arezzo, the estate is actually a full working farm, extending over 65 hectares of woods, vineyards and olive groves. Fruit and vegetables are grown, and hens and pigs are raised for eggs and salumi. But the land is made for wine; 'galestro' soils, a mix of loose marl and limestone, and a temperate climate regulated by the nearby Alpe di Poti mountain range, provide the perfect terroir for traditional Tuscan grapes Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Vermentino.
