100% Syrah grown on steep, terraced granite slopes on the right bank of the Rhône.
After fermentation, half the wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 months with the other half matured in stainless steel, prior to blending and botting.
Quite dark in colour, a rich garnet with violet hues on the rim, the nose is refined but thick with blackcurrant, morello cherry, garrigue and wild herbs, dark fruited but beautifully earthy too. This does need time to open up, allow a couple of hours decanting if you can, but the rewards are worth it. Fine-grained chocolately tannins and a lithe mineral base support cassis, black cherry and prune flavours, with hints of black olive, toasted nuts, coffee beans, black pepper and sweet spice.
It’s a finely spun web of polished fruit and elegant savouriness, not boistrous or showy and all the better for it. Drink on its own, with duck, or with very dark chocolate.
