Producer: Bodega Sommos
With 355 hectares under vine in DOC Somontano, Sommos, one of Spain's most modern bodegas, was built on the remains of the former Lazaro property, Irius in Barbastro, and has since formed an enviable reputation for cutting edge wines and wine tourism. The vineyards of Bodegas Sommos are located just south of the Pyrenees in hilly, undulating terrain with a continential climate and large diurnal shifts in temperature between night and day.
From its futuristic main building, which features interlaced cubes, to its 27-metre high winery, which was designed to use just gravity to move wine around, thereby attempting to limit the damage that traditional pumps cause. Sommos even uses the intelligent Cartesian 'porta ovis' (explorer) robot to carry out basic tasks such as filling/emptying barrels, stacking pallets etc and grapes are harvested during the cool of the night to emphasize the wines' fruitiness. Manager Carlos Sáenz and oenologist Óscar Martínez are within the nucleus of people that make up the Alliance of Garapiteros which has transformed the fortunes of this magnificent building in recent years.
