Smith & Sheth CRU Kawarau Pinot Noir 2019

42.00

Out of stock (back in stock September)

Description

The Pinot grapes are taken from two Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand accredited vineyards in Gibbston. Malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by ageing for 10 months in French oak, 28% new.

Deep plum with purple hues, there’s bright aromatics of blackberry, plum, black cherry, aniseed, liquorice, cloves and violets. A silky entry of ripe plum and blackberry with a savoury chocolaty backbone, fine grained tannin and a mineral acidity lead to a long and balanced finish with good focus.

This will just get better with age, cellaring comfortably up to 10 years from vintage.

Steve Smith MW has a formidable reputation in the wine industry: renowned for establishing Craggy Range in Hawke’s Bay and Martinborough, he is also one of few qualified Master of Wines to be based in New Zealand. Brian Sheth, from Austin Texas, is an investor and wildlife conservationist, with a strong affiliation and love for New Zealand. They met in Hawke’s Bay over a glass of Chardonnay and quickly found common ground in their love for fine wine, Aotearoa New Zealand and enjoying life’s pleasures.

In 2014 Steve and Brian realised their vision of founding a wine dream together, to craft impeccable wines from vineyards of exceptional quality and to create experiences where they could share these wines with like-minded people: "The French call it "terroir" – a sense of place. In New Zealand we have our own defining word - Tūrangawaewae - our place to stand in the world. This word describes the special connection of a people and the land they live, love and work in. Our wines reflect the magic and alchemy of this relationship and the true beauty of these places."

Vineyards are located in Marlborough — some of the oldest vines in the Wairau appellation where the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc story began back in the 1980s — Central Otago, and three separate locations in Hawke's Bay (Heretaunga): Howell, Mangatahi, and Omahu in the world famous Gimblett Gravels.

Aromatic and enticing, youthful, fruity and varietal scents of white and dark red raspberry, black currant and fruit spice. Toasty barrel scents of clove and vanilla with a cinnamon and cedar edge layer in complexity while a savoury mineral suggestion reflects Otago and Gibbston. Dry, savoury and fruity with flavours of dried herb and smoky barrel spices, youthful firm-ish tannins, a touch of gun flint and mineral and balanced acid line. Overall a lovely wine that is young and needing some development time. Well made and should be ready for excellent drinking from the end of 2022 or early 2023 through 2029. 94 points.
