Destined to become an icon wine for the south of Italy, and immediately sitting alongside Schild’s Moorooroo Shiraz and Duval-Leroy’s Femme de Champagne as a flagship wine in our portfolio, this is the first ever release of Viginti from Schola Sarmenti.
Squeezed drop by drop from the locally prized Negroamaro grape, this is the first wine from Schola using the dried grape method of Amarone, appassimento and Vin Santo, and launched to celebrate the 20th birthday of the winery.
Taken from two south-facing plots of 60 year old vines just outside the home village of Nardò, the grapes are hand-harvested and left to dry in cassettes (airy trays) for 48 days, before gentle extraction of the thick, sweet nectar that after fermentation goes into medium toasted French oak barriques for 30 months.
Even the bottle is unique, each one of the 7,000 bottles produced individually numbered, and embossed with the winery’s signature chalice in real gold. This is a highly collectable wine, particularly given that it’s the first vintage ever produced, there is huge pride in the Schola team over this celebratory wine.
