Schola Sarmenti ‘Nerìo’ Negroamaro-Malvasia 2019

25.00

Description

A Wine Spectator top 100 wine, Nerìo from Schola Sarmenti is a blend of 80 % Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera di Lecce with the grapes cultivated using the ancient Apulian head-trained Alberello system. Grapes are hand harvested and gently laid down into little airy crates, arriving as whole bunches at the winery. Once there, further selections are made using an advanced sorting table to pick only the ideal grapes for the blend.

A ruby-red wine with purple shading, it is generous in rich black fruit flavour with spicy notes and a supple, finely textured palate. The wine undergoes eight months in quality French oak then eight months in bottle before release which encourages the development of forest floor, leather and rich spiced oak nuances and balanced dried fruit character.

Schola Sarmenti, a stunning winery with soaring ceilings sculpted from local tuff and lecce stone, dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is run by the Marra and Calabrese families. The vineyards are farmed organically and within sight of the warm waters of the Adriatic. Schola Sarmenti practises "green harvesting", where a portion of the immature crop is sacrificed (i.e. picked and discarded) mid-season to increase the ripeness and quality of the remaining bunches. It also uses the ancient Puglian vine training system, Alberello.
