Rudini ‘Saro’ 2015



From Rudini’s oldest vineyards comes this 100% Nero d’Avola, aged in French oak for 9 months. Deep in body and colour — towards opaque black on the scale — this is a bit of a beast. Sweet black fruits are to the fore with elements of soy, black olive, coffee bean, cigar box and dark chocolate. Big in structure, with firm tannins and strapping acidity, it needs air time — recommended 3-6 hours in a decanter and it’s even more in its stride by day 2 — but so worth the wait.

Pair with any red meat dish you wish, you won’t overpower it. Magnificent.

The story of Rudini begins with its founder, Saro di Pietro, inheriting his passion for wine from his father. In 1969 Saro became a must seller and as a 'taster’, flanked by an accountant, he would evaluate the wines brought by their winemakers to the central square of Pachino. He became responsible for sorting wines for export to Genoa and then between Piedmont and France and buying the Rudini property in 1972 paved the way for him to create his own winery. By focusing vineyard plantings and wine selection on Nero d’Avola, Saro contributed to the revival and resurgence of the native grape in this key part of Sicily. The vineyards, amongst the most southerly in Italy, are located around Pachino in the south-east corner of Sicily, just 15 miles from the city of Avola that gave its name to the island's most important grape. Today, Saro’s son, Giuseppe and his wife Stefania continue the family business, having recently fully modernised the winery and vineyard management.
