Description

Organic Sangiovese from sloped south-facing vineyards near the San Martino a Quona church in Chianti Rùfina.

Three clones of Sangiovese planted in the late 1990s make up this superb family estate Riserva. Hand-harvested, usually in the first week of October when the phenolic and tannic levels are optimal, the wine settles first in large Slavonian oak barrels before refining in 225 litre French oak barriques for 18 months and a final 12 months in bottle.

Tile red in colour with a translucent rim and viscous tears, the nose is redolent of forest floor, earthy notes of leather and tobacco leaf, smoked meats and dried black fruits. The palate is delightfully ripe and piquant in equal measure, generous berry fruit, sour cherry and plum, with dusty, chocolately tannins, savoury spices like nutmeg and clove, cedar and black pepper. It’s beautifully balanced, retaining a refinement and elegance despite its big structure, flavour and alcohol.

Serve this up with a prime rib roast with lashings of olive oil roasted spuds tossed in garlic and mediterranean herbs, bellissima!

Producer: I Veroni

There's evidence of wine-growing at I Veroni going back to the middle ages, with a parts of a stone fermentation tank built in 1809 still visible in the cellars. Current ownership dates back to the start of the 20th century, Carlo Malesci purchasing the property, with it remaining in the family to this day.

The modest 20 hectares of vineyards are fully organic and were largely replanted in 1998, with Sangiovese making up 80% of vines; this is Chianti after all. Rùfina is the highest and most prestigious of the seven Chianti subzones, something owner Lorenzo Mariani was keen to honour and exploit when it came to reinvigorating the type and quality of wines the estate was producing during the early noughties. This is a proud, old estate with new energy and ideas.

Focusing on the authentic Sangiovese-Rùfina tradition, we work with three reds, one IGT and two Chianti Rùfina DOCG, and a luxurious, hedonistic Vin Santo.
