Quinta Do Judeu 2014

Description

Muscular, structured wine with a bouquet of crushed violets, coffee and black fruits. The palate is intense and complex, with lively acidity and assertive tannins balancing juicy notes of bitter chocolate, grilled meat and leather.  A lengthy finish frames the wine perfectly. Quinta do Judeu’s flagship red is made from fully fifteen different varieties, the vines of which are 60 years old. Grapes were trodden by bare human foot, before fermentation and maturation for 12 months in French oak barrel.

Decant for a few hours and enjoy with t-bone steak.

Producer: Quinta Do Judeu

Quinta do Judeu, which dates from 1932 and is owned by the Alves de Carvalho family, takes its name from the Roman-Jewish statue that keeps watch from its roof.

The estates spans 27 hectares planted solely to Port grapes and with vines ranging in age from 5-85 years. The starkly-beautiful Douro valley in northern Portugal is famous for its fortified wine, Port, but production is in fact evenly split between Port and table wines. The terraced, vertiginous slopes that characterise the region are composed of tough schist and granite.

Reviews

  • Jamie Goode (The Wine Anorak)

"Savoury, spicy notes on the nose with some chocolate and vanilla, as well as some subtle balsamic notes. Perfumed, floral and taut. The palate shows sweet raspberry, red cherry and plum fruit with a keen, savoury, spicy edge and some grippy structre."
