Native to Friuli, Ribolla Gialla finds its most noble expression in Colli Orientali del Friuli. Renowned and highly acclaimed since the 12th century, it has been enhanced by modern wine-making techniques that showcase its fruit and refinement.

This gets gentle pressing after harvest, cool fermentation in stainless steel, then four months maturation prior to bottling. Faded straw in colour with green reflections, the nose is honeyed with hints of baked apple, fig and wild flowers. Full of succulent fruit on the palate with sweet stone fruit offset by crunchy green apple and grapefruit, the minerally mid-palate carries through to an elegant but complex finish with hints of orange peel and flint.

An excellent and intriguing aperitif (it will have guests perplexed as to what it is), this is the perfect match for seafood starters or a delicate main course like sea bass.

When you get to the top of the hill where the winery is situated, it is easy to see why it is called ‘Poggiobello’ (beautifull hill): the view embraces 90 hectares of vineyards, arranged in orderly rows on terraces, facing south in the direction of the sea and northwards towards the white-topped Alps.

The land here is the key to the great wines produced. The largest single land-owner within the esteemed Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC, most of the Poggiobello estate is given to vineyards, every twist and turn in the undulating landscape carefully considered for its suitability for one grape over another. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Refosco, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc are grown here at an altitude ranging from 80 to 250 metres.

The cellars were renovated in 2004, carved into the hill beneath the winery and affording a year-round temperature of 17 degrees, along with the addition of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and a barrel room for ageing the estate's red wines.
