This epic Tinta de Toro (Toro’s native strain of Tempranillo) is sourced from 100-120 year old vineyards close to the small ViñaGuareña estate on the banks of the Guareña river, a tributary of the famous Douro river, in Toro.
Grapes are hand-picked in 15kg baskets, carefully destemmed and gently crushed before being fermented in new French oak, with constant batonnage to eke out every bit of colour and flavour from the skins.
Opaque ruby red in colour, the nose is a breathtaking mix of dried fruits — figs, plums and blueberries — with garrigue and wild herbs and hints of smoked meats, leather, cedar, cigar box, clove and nutmeg. Predictably full and concentrated, there’s a real finesse to the palate, rich fruit leavened by luxurious minerality running through the mid-palate, silky smooth tannins oozing cacao and coffee bean, tobacco and aromatic spices gently unwinding, with rounded acidity providing a freshness to the warm fruit.
