Gassac have managed to highlight the best of the Chardonnay varietal from the stony terroir of the Languedoc. Brilliant rich gold in colour with aromas of citrus fruits and wild flowers. The palate opens with fruity notes with a hint of honey, the finish clean and long.
Try with seafood gratin, trout with new potatoes and green beans or coconut fish curry. Also great with cheese soufflé or goats cheese.
Famously referred to as "the Lafite Rothschild of the Languedoc” by the French gastronomic guide Gault & Millau “the only Grand Cru of the Midi” (Hugh Johnson) and “exceptional” (Robert Parker), family owned Mas de Daumas Gassac has consistently been the Languedoc gold standard for the past four decades.
Daumas Gassac brought new ideas to the Languedoc by farming organically, using low-yielding old clone vines and planting a multitude of grape varieties to build complexity in their wines. The 80-hectare estate which made its first vintage in 1978 with the assistance of the celebrated oenologist Émile Peynaud, is located deep in the sultry Midi, but enjoys a temperate microclimate as a result of altitude, which gives the wines a lovely deftness of touch. Samuel Guibert has overseen winemaking at Mas de Daumas Gassac since 2005, taking over from his father, Aimé and the estate, which unusually for the Languedoc makes a red dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon rather than indigenous grapes, has come to be seen as the first to demonstrate that a French non-appellation wine could command a price equivalent to that of a classed growth Bordeaux.
