Description

The grapes for this fine Chardonnay were grown in the Maraekakaho District of Hawkes Bay on alluvial soils of the Riverview terraces, located on the lower reaches of the Ruahine foothills where they flank the Ngaruroro River. This area enjoys a renowned reputation for producing some of Hawkes Bay’s finest Chardonnays. Grapes were handpicked and lightly pressed, with malolactic fermentation carried out to develop an enhanced and softened texture, before the young wine was aged in French oak (one-third new) for 12 months sur lie, with frequent stirring to release important flavour components.

The palate is wonderfully mouth-filling and creamy, with intense peach and apricot flavours in harmony with fine French oak seasoning, leading to a satisfyingly long cashew, butterscotch and ginger spice finish. Instantly appealing, enjoy now or allow to age gracefully with careful cellaring.

Mills Reef Winery was founded in 1989 by the Preston family, and has gone on to establish itself as one of New Zealand’s leading boutique wine brands. The vineyards are located in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand’s oldest winegrowing region, where they grow internationally acclaimed full-bodied red wines of Bordeaux varietals and Syrah, within the famous stony Gimblett Gravels. The winery is often acclaimed as one of the most stylish in the country, with an Art Deco style fine dining restaurant and can be found on spacious landscaped grounds in the city of Tauranga. The wines speak of place, natural character, and 'balance' in composition, crafted under three tiers, each with its own distinctive style philosophy suited to differing occasions.

The award-winning winemaking team is led by Tim Preston and Paul Dawick who apply their considerable talents to make Mills Reef wines what they are today. An uncompromising pursuit of excellence has garnered Mills Reef a worldwide reputation, reflected in their many awards, including over 900 medals and 30 trophies in national and international competitions, along with having the honour of being twice-recipients of the prestigious New Zealand winemaker of the year award.

An enticing bouquet with a finesse, enticing complexity and a layer of purity. Flavours of lightly roasted stone fruits and apple, citrus then cashew and brazil nut. Vanilla cream and mild baking spices, medium+ acidity, oak and spices and smoke emerge as the wine opens up in glass. Creamy and full-bodied with an opulent core and lengthy finish. 93 points.
