Description

This is old-vine (vieilles vignes) Gamay, a minimum 40 years old, so rich in terroir expression.

The colour, appropriately, is vivid crimson/purple, quite deep for a Beaujolais. The nose is elegant and expressive with a fine mix of blackcurrant, raspberry and blackberry, and fleshy white fruits like pear and peach. Full and round on the palate with mouth-filling fruit, hints of violet and spice, all brought together by fine tannins and a crisp, lively acidity.

Chill lightly in summer to accentuate the vibrant fresh fruits, or enjoy at room temperature in the winter for the more savoury elements.

Vignerons des Pierres Dorées (literally, "winegrowers of the golden stones") is a cooperative of winegrowers covering the southwest of Beaujolais, about 40km north of Lyon and directly south of Burgundy's famed Côte-d'Or. They've a tasting room in Oingt, a settlement that began as a Roman castrum and restored during the last century to be regarded today as one of the most beautiful villages in France, the houses and streets here characterised by the very golden stones that make up the surrounding vineyards.
