Located in the hills of Langhe Piedmont, in the municipalities of Monforte d’Alba, Novello, La Morra, and Barbaresco, is ‘La Biòca’, a small vineyard estate made up of nine hectares dedicated to the production of high-quality wines.

‘Zabaldà’ — named after the ex-owner of the vineyard — is 100% Barbera, hand-harvested in small baskets, destemmed and cool fermented for 8-10 days, with 6 months’ maturation in steel tanks. Purple ruby in colour, this is gorgeously aromatic, a brimming basket of summer berries and wild flowers, raspberry, plum and blueberry intermingling with lavender, rose and garrigue. Those big fruit flavours dominate the palate, on a dry, savoury backbone with fine-grained tannins and soft, juicy acidity.

This goes superbly with lighter summer dishes, pasta and green pesto, grilled prawns or leafy salads.

Producer: La Biòca

La Biòca is a small winery in the Langhe, Piemonte, located close to Serralunga d'Alba (pictured above), a medieval castle village of narrow cobbled streets surrounded by sloping vineyards. The winery only uses grapes from its own vineyards, just 9 hectares located in the municipalities of Monforte d'Alba, Novello, La Morra, Barbaresco and Roddino, with plantings back to the early 1960s.

‘Biòca’ — meaning hard-headed or determined — is symbolic of the soils that the vines grow in. The meagre soil is made of different percentages of sand, clay, and limestone that force the vines to work hard for nutrients, and the temperate continental climate creates versatile and elegant wines.

Nebbiolo is king here but Dolcetto, Barbera and Chardonnay also excel. The varying terrain of these vineyards, with differing soil compositions, aspects, exposures and surrounding vegetation, provides a range of base wines, from elegant and fragrant to more alcoholic, robust and long-lasting, with the skill of the winemakers in the use of barrel ageing and final blending.
