La Biòca Stёrmà Nebbiolo d’Alba 2021



Located in the hills of Langhe Piedmont, in the municipalities of Monforte d’Alba, Novello, La Morra, and Barbaresco, is ‘La Biòca’, a small vineyard estate made up of nine hectares dedicated to the production of high-quality wines.

‘Stёrmà’ — Piedmontese for ‘hidden’ from the local phrase vàte stёrmé ‘nt la nèbia, ‘go hide in the fog’, where Nebbiolo thrives — is 100% Nebbiolo, hand-harvested in small baskets, destemmed and cool fermented for a few days with extended maceration on the skins, and then 12 months’ ageing in combined oak and steel barrels, with a further 6 months in traditional oak barriques to finish.

Ruby-garnet in colour, this will turn towards brick or tile red with a bit of age, this is typically earthy on the nose, redcurrant and rhubarb with savoury notes of leather, cedar, woodsmoke and tobacco. Those dry fruit notes hit first on the palate, wrapped in firm tannins and mouthwatering acidity, softening out to allow flavours of prune, redcurrant jelly, game and nuts to come through on a long, savoury, elegant finish.

Serve up with gamey casseroles or hard, aged cheeses.

Producer: La Biòca

La Biòca is a small winery in the Langhe, Piemonte, located close to Serralunga d'Alba (pictured above), a medieval castle village of narrow cobbled streets surrounded by sloping vineyards. The winery only uses grapes from its own vineyards, just 9 hectares located in the municipalities of Monforte d'Alba, Novello, La Morra, Barbaresco and Roddino, with plantings back to the early 1960s.

‘Biòca’ — meaning hard-headed or determined — is symbolic of the soils that the vines grow in. The meagre soil is made of different percentages of sand, clay, and limestone that force the vines to work hard for nutrients, and the temperate continental climate creates versatile and elegant wines.

Nebbiolo is king here but Dolcetto, Barbera and Chardonnay also excel. The varying terrain of these vineyards, with differing soil compositions, aspects, exposures and surrounding vegetation, provides a range of base wines, from elegant and fragrant to more alcoholic, robust and long-lasting, with the skill of the winemakers in the use of barrel ageing and final blending.
