SaleA bit of a mouthful here, in every sense, but it’s easy when you break it down. Kloster Eberbach is the winery, Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg the vineyard, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) the grape, and Grosses Gewächs the quality level (Grand Cru in this case).
The grapes for this Grand Cru Pinot Noir were harvested by hand, 100% destemmed, open mash fermented, aged for 20 months in large wooden barrels and bottled unfiltered.
Pale brick red in colour with a boistrous nose made up of morello cherries and blackcurrants with hints of leather, tar and tobacco and spicy, peppery notes. It presents itself with an expressive tannin structure, Burgundian in style with good concentration, dried red fruits with leafy herbal notes and a long and complex finish revealing smoke, hazelnut and truffle. Decant for 3-4 hours before serving.
The vineyards in the Rüdesheimer Berg date back to old Kurmainz properties, some of which date back to the 12th century. The up to 70% steep slope has a southern orientation, with the soil consisting mainly of quartzite, and it is considered the warmest location in the Rheingau.
This very refined pinot noir is just beginning to open up and show its delicate red-berry and mint aromas, plus a discreet whiff of toasty oak. Tightly wound on the medium bodied palate, where the abundant fine tannins and mineral acidity build a really firm core. Breathtaking fresh, long finish. Excellent aging potential! Drinkable now, but better from 2023 [for the 2018 vintage]. 94 points.
An introverted fragrance, suggesting strong terpene spice, small green cooking pear, dried lemon zest. A high amount of mealy phenols on a viscous layered background, mature, slowly rolling acid, mineral extract buffers the alcohol. 94 points.
