Kloster Eberbach Riesling Trocken 2020

20.25

Description

The ‘estate’ Riesing from Kloster Eberbach, this is sourced from various sites in the 230 hectares under vine around and adjacent to the abbey. Grapes are picked at full ripeness, gently pressed and fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel, resting for a few months on the lees prior to bottling.

Fresh and punchy from the off, the nose pings with stone-fruit and grapefruit aromas. Fresh and steely, there’s a pop of pear and passionfruit cut with lime, with a gentle acidity keeping the palate supple, minerality extending the length with floral elements. This is technically just off-dry with 8g residual sugar per litre, but tastes dry on the finish.

Producer: Kloster Eberbach

Kloster Eberbach is an unparalleled vineyard estate in Germany's Rheingau wine region, on the Hessian Bergstrasse (the Hessian mountain road) and the slopes of the Rhine valley. They've been making wine here since the 12th century, French Cisterian monks establishing the abbey (kloster) in 1136 and, it's believed, bringing vines with them from Burgundy. What was initially intended for personal use soon developed into a coveted commodity that secured the future and prosperity of the monastery.

At 300 hectares, the vineyards of Kloster Eberbach were at one point the largest in medieval Europe. Today, vines cover almost 230 hectares, of which 33 hectares are in the UNESCO World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley and include unique monopole sites with a worldwide reputation. The walled Steinberg domain is around 900 meters from abbey and is considered one of the most prestigious and valuable vineyard locations in the world.

Reviews

  • James Suckling

A classic, modern-style dry Riesling for the Rheingau with plenty of white peach and pear, but also floral and herbal notes. The medium body is brimming with fruit and moderate acidity makes this easy to enjoy. Everything fits very neatly. Good length, too. 90 points.
