K1 Shiraz 2018

This Adelaide Hills Shiraz, from the iconic K1 vineyard in Kuitpo, is more restrained and elegant than it’s southern Australian counterparts in the Barossa or McLaren Vale.

Grapes from the single vineyard are harvested and fermented together, with 30% going into new French for 18 months before blending and bottling.

Medium to full bodied and deep ruby in colour, K1 Shiraz is all about the terroir in Kuitpo, vibrant cool-climate aromas of boysenberry and mulberry, with earthy barnyard and wild herb notes of mint and eucalyptus. The palate is not all blockbuster fruit, more finely woven with integrated flavours of plum, black cherries, chocolate, game and leather, pepper and more exotic spices dancing on the tongue. The finish is smooth and savoury, loads of fruit but with an elegance and fine mineral balance, it’s a sophisticated and accomplished Shiraz.

Serve up with your favourite cut of beef steak with pepper sauce.

Producer: Wines by Geoff Hardy

Part of the Hardy wine dynasty in Australia, Geoff Hardy broke free of the family business to purchase his first vineyard in McLaren Vale in 1980. A few years later, Geoff found the perfect location for producing cool climate grapes in the Kuitpo region of the Adelaide Hills. He planted the first vineyard there in 1987 and named it K1 since this unique site was the first commercial planting of vines in Kuitpo. Since then Geoff has been involved in the planting of more than 3,000 hectares of vines and has consulted to more than 200 different vineyards in Australia, France and Italy.

In 2004, Geoff launched the Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy and GMH ranges of wine. Together with K1 Wines, these brands now make up Wines by Geoff Hardy and continue the 160-year old family tradition of pushing the boundaries of Australian viticulture. Winestate Magazine, Australia's leading wine industry publication, named Wines By Geoff Hardy Australian Wine Company of the Year in both 2012 and 2014, and senior winemaker Shane Harris Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2012, 2018 and 2020, the only triple winner of this coveted award.
