Description

“Packed full of those beautiful white peach and nougat flavours” — Jules Taylor.

The berries for this lush white come from the Lower Dashwood and Lower Wairau subregions of Marlborough. A portion of the crop was hand-harvested, with the balance machine-picked in the chill of autumn dawn.

Amazing generosity and oomph here in a Kiwi white that sings with sassy lychee and guava notes, fleshed out by juicy peach and creamy nougat characters. Brilliant fruit, with bright flavours, juicy acidity and dazzling panache. Pair with spring rolls or honey-lemon chicken.

Pinot Gris is actually the same grape as Pinot Grigio (prosaically, ‘grey berry’) but wines labelled ‘gris’ are stylistically richer, more full-bodied and flavoursome, and higher in alcohol.

Producer: Jules Taylor

After years of winemaking and vintage experience worldwide and at various Marlborough cellars, Zoology graduate Jules Taylor (who was born the year the first vines were planted in Marlborough) launched her eponymous label with 200 cases in 2001.

Jules completed a postgraduate course in winemaking / viticulture at Lincoln before working a number of vintages in Piedmont, Sicily, Australia and Cloudy Bay. After taking a permanent job at Marlborough Valley Cellars, she was mentored by Kiwi wine industry veterans Kim Crawford, Simon Waghorn and Matt Thompson who encouraged her to launch her own label, which she did in 2001.

Five years, two children and a few thousand cases later, Jules Taylor Wines was officially established and is now an internationally-recognised wine brand with multiple awards and worldwide fans.

Reviews

  • Wine Spectator

"Expressive, with plenty of floral, honeysuckle and peach blossom aromatics...core of fresh melon, green apple and peach flavors..."

  • Michael Cooper

Grown in the Awatere and Wairau valleys, the light lemon/green 2018 vintage (4.5*) was mostly handled in tanks; 5 per cent of the blend was oak-aged. Produced in a dry style (2 grams/litre of residual sugar), it is attractively scented and full-bodied, with vibrant, youthful flavours of pears, apples and lychees, gentle spicy notes, a touch of complexity and a smooth, lingering finish. 4.5 stars.
