‘I Domi’ Chianti Rùfina 2020

€25.00
Description
Oak-aged Chianti from organic family vineyards in the Rùfina subzone.
This is 90% Sangiovese with the balance made up of Canailo Nero and Colorino, all grown within the I Veroni estate. Maturation is for 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels, with a minimum 8 months in bottle prior to release.
Ruby-violet in colour with a clear rim and big tears, this is tightly coiled, an hour’s decanting recommended to open up the aromatics. Get it going and blackberry, plum and dates intermingle with smoked meat, tobacco leaf and leather, a fine frame of grippy tannins and tart acidity supporting oodles of fruit on the palate, with a minerally texture carrying savoury nut and spice notes to the finish.
We first tried this with roast beef and it sang, but it would work well with any red meat, casserole, or rich pasta dishes.

There's evidence of wine-growing at I Veroni going back to the middle ages, with a parts of a stone fermentation tank built in 1809 still visible in the cellars. Current ownership dates back to the start of the 20th century, Carlo Malesci purchasing the property, with it remaining in the family to this day.
The modest 20 hectares of vineyards are fully organic and were largely replanted in 1998, with Sangiovese making up 80% of vines; this is Chianti after all. Rùfina is the highest and most prestigious of the seven Chianti subzones, something owner Lorenzo Mariani was keen to honour and exploit when it came to reinvigorating the type and quality of wines the estate was producing during the early noughties. This is a proud, old estate with new energy and ideas.
Focusing on the authentic Sangiovese-Rùfina tradition, we work with three reds, one IGT and two Chianti Rùfina DOCG, and a luxurious, hedonistic Vin Santo.
