Description

From Exopto’s oldest vineyard plots where random rows of white vines punctuate the red vines, this is mostly Viura with some Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, matured in a combination of 4,000-liter oak foudres, concrete eggs and used 225-liter barriques.

Intense bouquet with lactic hints as well as very ripe fruit (peaches, pears, apricots) and certain spices (cinnamon, anise). On the palate the wine has a wonderfully balanced acidity, alcoholic strength and complexity with rich, perfumed and intricate flavours that gain intensity in the mouth.

Just 7,000 bottles produced for this vintage.

Producer: Bodegas Exopto

Bodegas Exopto (Exopto from the Latin - to desire) was founded in 2003 by Bordeaux expat Tom Puyaubert, who had originally moved to Spain in his capacity as salesman for famous French cooperage (barrel maker) Saury. In fact Tom continues to work selling oak barrels in parallel with his ambitious project of crafting high-end Rioja. His estate comprises 10 hectares that are subdivided into 15 'micro parcels'. Depending on the plot, the vines (which are usually 'en vaso', or bush-trained) cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria at over 500 metres altitude, might be anywhere from 30 to 100 years old.

    Tim Atkin

Frenchman Tom Puyaubert makes this outstanding white wine from co-fermented Viura, Garnacha Blanc, Malvasia, Jaen, Moscatel and Torrontés, using a combination of larger, older wood and concrete eggs. Leesy, textured and subtly wooded with a hint of skin tannins and an exotic undertone. 2019-2023. 95 points.

The white 2022 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco was produced with the grapes from the white varieties that are planted scattered among the reds in the old vineyards on the poorer soils, mostly Viura with some 10% Garnacha Blanca and 5% Malvasía Riojana. It has 13% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity for such a warm year. It matured in a combination of 4,000-liter oak foudre (60%), concrete egg (20%) and used 225-liter barriques (20%), but the oak is very integrated. The wine is expressive, harmonious, clean and quite fruit-driven and refreshing. It's balance and super tasty, finishing with a salty twist. It's approachable but should last in bottle. 7,000 bottles produced, it was bottled in July 2023.
