Almost two years in oak, this underrated French hybrid gets some TLC in Australia’s Adelaide Hills.
Durif originates from southern France and was created in 1880 by Dr Durif from a cross between the varieties Syrah and Peloursin. This hand crafted Adelaide Hills version gets 21 months in seasoned French oak.
Deep in colour, dark ruby red with violet reflections, aromas leap from the glass, a warm summer fruit bowl of blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants, with wafts of vanilla and oak spice. The palate is thick and layered, a rich mouthful of sweet berry fruits quickly softened by smooth chocolately tannins, a fine balance of acidity and tannins providing great length with cameos of mulberry, prune, tobacco leaf and black pepper.
Try with a roasted rib eye on the bone served with balsamic glazed root vegetables.
