Greenhough Hope Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019

35.00

Description

This single vineyard Pinot is made only in the best vintages from selected clonal parcels of fruit across the home blocks in the Hope Vineyard, certified organic since 2011.

Fruit was hand harvested and chilled overnight, pressed, briefly settled and run to French oak barriques (15% new), where it remained for 10 months, naturally completing malo during the following spring. The selected batches were blended and allowed to rest in tank before bottling un-fined and only lightly filtered.

Bright, floral and light spice notes with a hint of youthful reduction on the nose. The palate is full and richly fruited showing dark cherry and red plum. Notable structure is nicely imbedded from start to end. There’s a generous, joyous character and energy to the wine with balance between grip, freshness and bright lush fruit.

In late 1990, a young couple left Auckland to re-settle in a rural pocket of Nelson, encouragingly named ‘Hope’. Swapping city for country life, Andrew and Jenny Greenhough took on a four hectare property determined to create something of their own. The vineyard had been partially established in the mid-70s by a pioneer amateur winemaker, heavy-cropping Muller Thurgau and green-edged Cabernet Sauvignon vines were removed, a property next door was purchased, and new Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted. In 2008, Andrew and Jenny challenged themselves again, committing to organics and beginning the conversion to full BioGro NZ certification. All of the now 9 hectares are certified organic.

Nelson has a unique, sheltered climate, protected by mountain ranges to the south, east and west, with mild sea breezes from Tasman Bay to the north mitigating frosts through spring and autumn, and easing the heat in summer. Clear, cool nights preserve flavour and varietal character, letting fruit acids reduce gradually over settled autumn months; a mineral, fruit-based acidity underpins all varieties providing definition, structure and elegance. These are true wines of place, each batch an autobiography, from the sea that shaped the land to the hand that picked the grapes.

The 2017 Hope Vineyard Pinot Noir contains 30% whole bunches so its showing a bit of steaminess at this early point in its evolution. But they add attractive spice and tea elements to the cherry fruit in this medium-bodied wine. It’s silky in feel yet firm, hinting at roses on the long, elegant finish. 92 pts.
