Florent Descombe Vosne-Romanée 2014

Description

Arguably the most famous wine village in the world and the undisputed star of the Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée is the ultimate combination of elegance and power.

The Pinot Noir vines here are over 40 years old, hand-harvested and carefully sorted with a cold pre-ferment lasting up to 5 days. Fermentation then takes place under controlled temperature for around 3 weeks before ageing in a combination of new (30%) and second use oak barrels for 16 months.

An exquisite wine, already (in 2019) showing impressive maturity and flavour development. Garnet towards brick red in colour, with an orangey tinge towards the rim, the nose is redolent of forest floor, leather, dried meat and cigar box, backed up by vibrant red fruits, violets and other floral notes. With a depth and concentration belying its light colour, the palate is dense and layered, a seamless combination of warm summer berries, cherries, violets, leather, game, cigar box, smoked meats and wild herbs, with an ethereal balance and finely polished structure.

Will cellar for 20 years from vintage. Serve at 12-14 degrees and don’t bother food matching, this is the star.

Producer: Descombe Family Wines

Vins Descombe is a family-owned company since 1905, growing from small vineyard holdings in Beaujolais to operating across Burgundy and latterly into the Rhône in recent years. Distribution was almost entirely domestic until the 2000s, since when they've achieved success in export markets and invested heavily in upgrading on the production side. Marine Descombe (above right, with father Florent) is the fifth generation and has overseen much of the modernisation, as well as further vineyard acquisitions in Beaujolais, Chablis and, most recently, the Rhône.

Wines are modern in style with a pride in regional identity — Descombe's portfolio covers some of the most recognised and highly prized appellations in the world — but, largely because of their extensive vineyard holdings and grower connections, they're also able to produce outstanding varietal table wines away from regional restrictions.
