Florent Descombe Cheverny 2018

Both incongruous (Sauvignon and Chardonnay together?) and a Loire classic, this is a must-try for lovers of fine whites.

We love Cheverny from our first visit to the Loire over 20 years ago, a rare blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay that works on the basis of complementing terroir. This is 80% in favour of the Sauvi, with just some extended lees contact after fermentation to flesh out the palate.

Pale straw-yellow in colour, the nose has unmistakable gooseberry, citrus and tropical notes from the Sauvignon with the addition of musk, spice and nutty elements. It’s bracing on the open, a big hit of grapefruit and gooseberry, with soft yellow melon and stone-fruit on a minerally mid-palate and a crisp, clean finish.

Serve up with shellfish, oysters with freshly squeezed lemon, or go all out with lobster thermidor.

  • Bone dry, zesty, minerally
  • 750ml
  • 13% Alcohol
  • Cork
  • Drink by 2023

Producer: Descombe Family Wines

Vins Descombe is a family-owned company since 1905, growing from small vineyard holdings in Beaujolais to operating across Burgundy and latterly into the Rhône in recent years. Distribution was almost entirely domestic until the 2000s, since when they've achieved success in export markets and invested heavily in upgrading on the production side. Marine Descombe (second from left above, with father Florent on the right) is the fifth generation and has overseen much of the modernisation, as well as further vineyard acquisitions in Beaujolais, Chablis and, most recently, the Rhône.

Wines are modern in style with a pride in regional identity — Descombe's portfolio covers some of the most recognised and highly prized appellations in the world — but, largely because of their extensive vineyard holdings and grower connections, they're also able to produce outstanding varietal table wines away from regional restrictions.
