Both incongruous (Sauvignon and Chardonnay together?) and a Loire classic, this is a must-try for lovers of fine whites.
We love Cheverny from our first visit to the Loire over 20 years ago, a rare blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay that works on the basis of complementing terroir. This is 80% in favour of the Sauvi, with just some extended lees contact after fermentation to flesh out the palate.
Pale straw-yellow in colour, the nose has unmistakable gooseberry, citrus and tropical notes from the Sauvignon with the addition of musk, spice and nutty elements. It’s bracing on the open, a big hit of grapefruit and gooseberry, with soft yellow melon and stone-fruit on a minerally mid-palate and a crisp, clean finish.
Serve up with shellfish, oysters with freshly squeezed lemon, or go all out with lobster thermidor.
