From a single vineyard of the rare grape Maturana Tinta, just 0.3 hectares in size and surrounded by pine trees.

This is properly mind-bending stuff. Opaque, nearly black in the glass, the aromas are reminiscent of a barbecue on a bonfire with bitter woodsmoke, smoked meats, star anise, sumac and dried fruits all identifiable. The palate is incredibly minerally with roasted coffee beans galore, dates and blackcurrants providing a sweet relief with loads of oriental spices, black pepper and even a hint of sea salt on the splendidly well rounded finish. Stunning stuff and something very different.

Maturana Tinta is a near-extinct red grape found exclusively in Rioja. It is late-ripening (winemaker Tom Puyaubert picked the 2016 of this in November) when compared to Rioja staples Tempranillo and Grenache, commonly exhibiting aromas of mountain herbs, sweet peppers, balsamic and spicy notes, and gives high acidity and colour.

Bodegas Exopto (Exopto from the Latin - to desire) was founded in 2003 by Bordeaux expat Tom Puyaubert, who had originally moved to Spain in his capacity as salesman for famous French cooperage (barrel maker) Saury. In fact Tom continues to work selling oak barrels in parallel with his ambitious project of crafting high-end Rioja. His estate comprises 10 hectares that are subdivided into 15 'micro parcels'. Depending on the plot, the vines (which are usually 'en vaso', or bush-trained) cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria at over 500 metres altitude, might be anywhere from 30 to 100 years old.
