El Valao Mencía 2018

Out of stock ()

Old vine Mencía roble, from the 90 year old El Valao vineyard.

Carefully hand-harvested from these near century-old vines, grapes are hand sorted then fermented in small steel tanks before going into French oak barrels for 6-8 months.

Rich in colour, dark ruby red with violet tears, this is warm and welcoming on the nose, sweet red berry aromas with elevated floral notes, hints of rosemary, mint and vanilla. Ripe and full-bodied, black plum and cherry open up on a lithe, minerally palate, fresh fruits giving way to dried fruits and more savoury elements, hints of fruitcake spice, chocolate and coffee beans.

Enjoy with lamb shanks, slow-cooked in red wine with rosemary, thyme and cracked black pepper.

  • Full, ripe, structured
  • 750ml
  • 14% Alcohol
  • Cork

Producer: Vinos Valtuille

After a few decades working their land and vines for other producers, Dimas and Isabel García decided at the end of the 1990s it was time to build their own winery, for the future of their family and their vineyards. It's a decision we're extremely grateful for — this is a small farm, just 15 hectares of Mencía vines up to a century old, that we get to enjoy as single estate wines.

Two of the couple's four children, Marcos and Elena, run operations today; Marcos in the vineyard and cellar, Elena the driving force behind the family's growing success domestically and internationally, with glowing reviews from the likes of Luis Gutiérrez and James Suckling.
