This wine is part of a precious collection of single vineyard wines by Bodegas Exopto, small bottlings that showcase unique old plots and single varietals on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in Rioja.
El Espinal is a small vineyard of Maturana Tinta vines, located at 650m above sea level, with the Sierra Cantabria rising up behind to the north, and the vast plains of Rioja laid out below to the south. Harvest is by hand, ageing is for 12 months in used French oak barrels of varying size.
Dark purple in colour with heady aromas of blackberry, blueberry, white pepper, vanilla and liquorice. Mouthfilling black fruit with melting tannins and a fine minerally texture, savoury notes of oak spice, black tea, wood smoke and tar, with tangy black cherry, coffee beans and dark chocolate on the finish. This is iron fist in velvet glove stuff, a wine with the power of a heavyweight boxer and the balance and elegance of a ballerina.
Very limited quantities, there’s only 1,400 bottles of this produced each vintage.
