This wine is part of a precious collection of single vineyard wines by Bodegas Exopto, small bottlings that showcase unique old plots and single varietals on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in Rioja.
El Bernate is a small vineyard of 80 year old Malvasia vines, located at 400m above sea level, with the Sierra Cantabria rising up behind to the north, and the vast plains of Rioja laid out below to the south. Harvest is by hand, ageing is for 12 months in a single concrete egg of 950 litres (the entire production of this wine).
Pale green/gold in colour, floral notes of acacia and rose give way to more citric tones (lime) and stone fruit (nectarine). There’s good tension on the palate, full and supple with a fine minerality and rounded acidity, layers of stone fruit with hints of fresh fig and honey, finishing with tangy apple and citrus notes and loads of length.
Very limited quantities, there’s only 1,200 bottles of this produced each vintage.
