Full bodied and richly layered Reserva made up of Tempranillo (85%), Grenache and Mazuelo (aka Carignan), from vines mainly over 50 years old on the slopes of Moncalvillo in Rioja Alta. Ageing is for 24 months in American oak barrels with a further 18 months minimum bottle maturation.
This is wonderful stuff. Brick red and deep in colour, the nose has a great complexity of aromas, blackberries, dark cherries and dried fruits with a pot pourri of spices, clove, star anise, tons of vanilla and sweet plum pudding spices. The palate is plush and dense, sweet tannins supporting oodles of dark fruit with chocolate, coffee and caramel notes peppered with those toasty oak spices through to the finish.
Serve up with any roasted red meat, particularly lamb or game.
