Domaine Fond Croze ‘Mozaik’ Côtes du Rhône Villages 2021

A ‘ballerina’ blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, balancing richness and power with aromatic freshness.

The three grapes are all grown in the Long family vineyard in Saint-Roman-De-Malegarde. Grenache, Syrah and Carignan are harvested and vinified separately, with fermentation done the traditional way in concrete vats, then different maturation techniques employed for each varietal — ageing in the concrete for the Carignan, larger 350 litre barrels for the Grenache, and the standard 225 litre barriques for the Syrah. Blending the finished wine takes place after about a year.

Very deep in colour, ruby red with purplish reflections, the nose shows intense aromas of dried black fruits, licorice and spices. There is a lot of power in this wine but it’s beautifully controlled, dense flavours of bramble berry, black cherry and prune, tempered by smooth, chocolately tannins and a lifted freshness from a finely tuned acidity. Long and complex on the finish, with the balance and elegance of a ballerina.

Producer: Domaine Fond Croze

Modern chic-looking Domaine Fond Croze is actually over 100 years old. Founded by Charles Long at the end of the First World War, Charles returned from the great battle and settled with his family in Saint Roman de Malegarde, a small village of 300 inhabitants in the north of Vaucluse, behind the villages of Cairanne and Rasteau. He acquired his first land, cultivating vines, melons, peach and apricot trees. A few years later, his son Raymond joined him and, little by little, the two developed the farm to nearly 25 hectares of land, planted mostly with vines and olive trees.

Daniel and Bruno Long, Raymond's sons, joined the family business from a very young age and in 1997 created the modern vision of the traditional family farm, Domaine Fond Croze. Upgrades were made to the winery and more land was acquired, and by 2009 they began the conversion to organic cultivation of the now 80 hectares. Today, Fond Croze produces a stunning range of organic wines from the multitude of terroirs available to them, from consistently superb Côtes du Rhône blends, to cru villages, to single varietals from prized individual plots.
