Created in honour of the iconic Delmonico restaurant in New York, established in 1837 by the Delmonico brothers John and Peter, that gained renown for its luxury, gourmet extravagance and private cellar of over 1,000 fine wines from around the world.
This is a four grape blend of Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from the vineyards of Château Lescalle in the Haut-Médoc, aged for two full years in oak barrels prior to blending and bottling. Rich, full-bodied and sweet-fruited, it’s just perfect for a big juicy steak.
Blackcurrant, blackberry and fruitcake aromas mingle with toasty oak elements, coffee and caramel, ringing the pleasure receptors and inviting you in. The palate is predictably fruit-forward, concentrated cassis, black plum and date characters, with grippy tannins and piquant acidity providing firm support while backnotes of dark chocolate, nutmeg and roasted coffee beans unwind on the finish. It’s joyously good.
It has to be the steak Delmonico’s is famous for. Serve up with prime rib steak, ideally charred within an inch of its existence on the outside while still bloody on the inside.
