Corral Rioja Gran Reserva 1975

Description

To celebrate the upcoming 50 years of the ‘new’ Don Jacobo winery in Navarrete, the Corral family have released four rare vintages from the 1970s, Gran Reserva wines that have lain untouched for decades in the winery cellars since bottling. Made traditionally and evocative of a different era, these fully mature wines defy their age and show great charm and character, each bottle being a piece of living history.

This is a rare opportunity to own bottles of long aged Rioja and the perfect gift for anyone turning 50 in the next few years.

This 1975 vintage is the first Gran Reserva to be made by the Corral family at their new winery in Navarrete village, completed in 1974 and named ‘Don Jacobo’ in honour of its position on the famous pilgrimage route the ‘Ruta Jacobea’ (‘Way of St. James’) or Camino de Santiago. Aged for at least 36 months in oak before bottling. A traditional blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan).

In presentation wooden gift box.

Historical background
Following the death of General Franco, Prince Juan Carlos is sworn in as King, ushering in a new era for Spain. A joint space mission is launched by Apollo & Soyuz. The Vietnam war ends. Paul Allen & Bill Gates register the company name ‘MICROSOFT’. Cinemas first screen blockbuster movie ‘Jaws’. The rock band
Queen release Bohemian Rhapsody.

Tasting notes
Pale garnet at its centre with flecks of bronze at the rim. Nuanced aromas rise gently being reminiscent of the forest in autumn. Within 30 minutes the aromas develop across a range of autumn fruits, spice and slow baked plum. The light tannins are now part of a dry savoury structure. A rare, delicate Rioja from an important year in Spanish history.

Rating
Officially rated by the Consejo Regulador Rioja as ‘Very Good’. Described by Decanter magazine as ‘Another year in which top growers such as Faustino, Olarra and Corral turned out better wines than the general rating might imply’. On average around 9% of total production became Gran Reserva.

Service and food pairing
Allow the wine to stand upright for several hours. Carefully open at time of serving it is better not to decant Rioja of this age. Pour carefully as the bottle will contain sediments. A perfect partner to calves liver, roasted aubergine or subtle cheeses.

Producer: Bodegas Corral (Don Jacobo)

Bodegas Corral was established in 1898 and remains in the Corral family hands to this day. The Don Jacobo brand that adorns most of winery's labels is named after the pilgrimage Way of St. James, or Camino de Santiago, with Corral the only winery in Rioja to sit right on the world heritage route.

Corral were early adopters to organic growing and, despite their modest size compared to some of the huge commercial producers in the region, have one of the largest holdings of organic vineyards in Rioja. By 2023 the entire vineyard holdings will be certified organic and all wines are already vegan certified. The philosophy is to sacrifice volume for quality and environmental harmony, to future proof the winery and vineyards, and make sure that the next generation of the family inherit something very special.

Vineyard plantings include indigenous varietals Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Viura, with increasing focus on rarer varietals such as Tempranillo Blanco, Graciano, Maturana Tinta and Blanco, and Garnacha Blanca.
