Buissonnier Mercurey 2022

30.00

Description

One of the most important appellations in Burgundy, Mercurey produces more wine than all the other villages combined in the Côte Chalonnaise. The Buissonnier vineyard is located on a hillside ranging from 230 to 320m in altitude, offering essential protection from wind and humidity for the slow ripening of the delicate Pinot Noir grape.

This gets six months in used French oak barrels. Deep red with ruby glints, showing red berries and floral notes on the nose, with a hint of leather, garrigue and spice. Punchy and bright on the open with a summer fruit bowl of raspberry, strawberry and cherry, a racy acidity and firm but elegant tannins give way to minerality with savoury, earthy notes on a fine, long finish.

This will mature to a peak around 8 years from vintage, becoming softer and more savoury with age. Serve up with coq au vin and gratin dauphinois, and have a second bottle on standby.

Producer: Vignerons de Buxy

Founded on 30 June 1931, by 98 pioneer wine growers from Buxy and some surrounding areas, the Cave des Vignerons de Buxy was created thanks to the determination of the Côte Chalonnaise winegrowers to pool their talents in a common project and make their wine, tend to their vines and sell and market their produce together. The story behind this company is one of an human and social endeavour stretching back over 80 years.

In the initial years their financial resources were very limited and it was only the energy and tenacity of these first wine growers that kept the Cooperative going. In 2004 the winery built a 33,000-hl capacity vathouse for both red and white wines on the Buxy site, boasting temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats along with a pneumatic pressing station.

In 2011 the winery proudly turned 80 years old and counted over 272 family-run domaines among its members, working the vines as their fathers used to do. Every year Alain Pierre, the oenologist for the Cave des Vignerons de Buxy, reappraises past approaches and cedes the upper hand to Nature, allowing the full character of the wine to shine through.
