Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2021

18.25

Description

Our top selling red over the last 5 years is a fusion of La Rioja’s three predominant grapes, aged in used oak for around 4 months to produce a young and fresh roble with an explosion of fruity aromas and a silky, creamy texture.

A deep red colour, dense and bright in appearance, there are pronounced aromas of cherry and strawberry, with mineral and floral notes. A luscious palate of strawberry and cranberry flavours supply a sweetness that contrasts with the pleasant acidity, the finish soft, elegant and long.

Producer: Bodegas Exopto

Bodegas Exopto (Exopto from the Latin - to desire) was founded in 2003 by Bordeaux expat Tom Puyaubert, who had originally moved to Spain in his capacity as salesman for famous French cooperage (barrel maker) Saury. In fact Tom continues to work selling oak barrels in parallel with his ambitious project of crafting high-end Rioja. His estate comprises 10 hectares that are subdivided into 15 'micro parcels'. Depending on the plot, the vines (which are usually 'en vaso', or bush-trained) cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria at over 500 metres altitude, might be anywhere from 30 to 100 years old.

"Expressive, wild black fruits, touch of sweet spices... super pleasant."

  • The Wine Advocate

"Sensational, singular Rioja from an organic vineyard that was planted in 1980... offers up a beautiful black cherry and blackcurrant fruit intermixed with strawberry jam, cedarwood and graphite. Superb, opulent, luscious, fruit-forward red."

The fresh and fruit-driven 2016 Bozeto de Exopto is a blend of 50% Garnacha, 40% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, to provide acidity and freshness. The different grapes were aged separately for seven months, the Garnacha in concrete, some Tempranillo in oak vats and the remaining Tempranillo and Graciano in well-seasoned, neutral barriques. It's a fruit-driven, slightly grapey red, and this cuvée, with its high percentage of juicy, round and ripe Garnacha, has more of a Mediterranean character. Precise and clean. 90 points.
