Description

Merlot has been cultivated in Veneto and Friuli since the mid-19th century and has become naturally acclimatised to the area, producing smooth, full-bodied wines in the mould of right-bank Bordeaux.

The last of the red grapes harvested in the Borgo del Falco estate each year, this gets fermented at ambient temperature in stainless steel before being matured in steel for a four months. Intense ruby red in colour, the nose is a summer berry bounty of red cherries, mulberries and black plum, with herbaceous notes and a hint of tobacco leaf. The palate is smooth and rounded with dark fruits to the fore but with a cleansing acidity and fine length.

Seriously good with cured meats and mature hard cheeses.

Borgo del Falco is a zero-carbon winery in Friuli, in the little village of Palazzolo dello Stella close to the Adriatic sea. Borgo in Italian means 'little group of houses', the winery building made up of several old, traditional borgos that used to be home to farmers and their families. The 'falco' relates to the falcons that fly over the vineyards still, mascots and guardians of tradition according to the locals.

The vineyards consist of 50 hectares in one plot around the borgo, planted out with the indigenous grapes of Friuli, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Refosco and Schioppettino, and of course the commercially essential Pinot Grigio, plus other international varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Merlot.

With investment in geothermal heating and solar panels, the borgo became self-sufficient for energy with zero emissions. There's also minimal use of pesticides in the vineyards and sulphites in the wines, always with the aim of reducing commercial footprint and ensuring sustainability for future generations.
