The Zotzenberg lieu-dit is located in the village of Mittelbergheim, a Grand Cru vineyard with a south-eastern exposure and a distinctive limestone-dominant soil that retains moisture and resists drought.
The vines here, the only Grand Cru classified Sylvaner in France, are over 60 years old, certified organic, and produce a long-ageing wine of great depth and finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand and allowed to settle on the lees, with a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation prior to gentle filtering, and maturation in century-old oak casks.
Straw-gold in colour with a nose of ripe autumn fruits, stone-fruit and citrus, Comice pear and peach most notably with hints of orange blossom, lemon peel and thyme. The palate is rich and full-bodied, fleshy white fruit balanced by a fine minerality, complex and long on the finish.
Serve with mild cheeses, duck à l’orange or fois gras fried in butter.
