The best Pinot Gris we’ve ever tasted, this is a breathtakingly impressive fine white.
The Moenchberg lieu-dit is located between the villages of Andlau and Eichhoffen, Grand Cru vineyards with a southern exposure and a distinctive marl-limestone-slate soil. Moenchberg is renowned for producing rich and complex wines even when they are young, recognised by their generous frame and punchy acidity.
It’s this acidity which marks out this Pinot Gris for us. The organic vines were only planted in 2014 but already produce wines of great finesse and depth. Hand-harvested and cold fermented, the wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels.
Straw-gold in colour with a rich, inviting nose of stone-fruit, wild flowers, honey, musk and citrus peel. The palate is ripe, full-bodied and richly layered, fleshy mango and quince jelly framed by a saline minerality, with elements of flint, toasted almond and dried apricot on a dry, elegant and lengthy finish, it’s just sublime.
Serve with fois gras, pork and crackling or even the Christmas turkey, it’ll handle it all.
