Bleasdale’s Mulberry Tree Cab is an elegant wine with aromas of mixed berries, dark chocolate and violets, the palate smooth with blackcurrant and spicy oak flavours, finishing with fine chalky tannins. This is oak-aged in a mixture of French and American hogsheads for 12 months.
Decanting is recommended and the wine will cellar for a decade.
Frank Potts, an immigrant from England, founded Bleasdale in 1850, and six generations later his descendants form the second-oldest wine family in Australia (after Yalumba). The name comes from a local Reverend, Ignatius Bleasdale, who advocated a “sober, wine-drinking community that excludes ardent spirits.” An anti-temperance priest suited Frank’s ironic sense of humour, so he immortalised him in his winery.
James Halliday Wine Companion 2017
Bright, deep crimson-purple, this has clear-cut varietal character with blackcurrant and a dash of dark chocolate. The tannins are soft and ripe, the French oak subtle. An attractive now-or-later style. 92 Points.
