Bleasdale ‘Broad-Side’ 2017

19.75

Description

The great Australian blend of Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon with a splash of Malbec. This wine shows the varieties with plum and blackcurrant fruits, typical chocolate character from the Shiraz and boysenberry spice from the Malbec. A juicy and persistent flavour and smooth velvety tannins.

Enjoy with a hearty winter stew or summer BBQ.

Frank Potts, an immigrant from England, founded Bleasdale in 1850, and six generations later his descendants form the second-oldest wine family in Australia (after Yalumba). The name comes from a local Reverend, Ignatius Bleasdale, who advocated a “sober, wine-drinking community that excludes ardent spirits.” An anti-temperance priest suited Frank’s ironic sense of humour, so he immortalised him in his winery.

Bleasdale founder Frank Potts arrived from England to South Australia in 1836 and founded the winery in Langhorne Creek in 1850. Six generations later his descendants make up the second oldest wine family in Australia after Yalumba. The Bleasdale name comes from a local Reverend, Ignatius Bleasdale, who advocated a “sober, wine-drinking community that excludes ardent spirits.” An anti-temperance priest suited Frank’s ironic sense of humour, so he immortalised him in his winery.

With James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year 2018 Paul Hotker at the helm, Bleasdale's star has never been higher. Labelled ‘the ultimate viniculturalist’, Hotker is propelling the Bleasdale wine dynasty ever forward, combining over 170 years of history in its name with 50 hectares of primarily red vines in Langhorne Creek and whites in the Adelaide Hills. Theirs is a diverse portfolio of wines ranging from cool climate whites to revered sparkling Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Langhorne-specialism Malbec. Robert Parker is a Bleasdale fan, noting that it “produces some of the most reliable, fairly-priced wines around.”

Reviews

  • James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion

"Bright crimson. A medium-bodied palate, with plum, blackberry, blackcurrant and a lick of dark chocolate given texture by silky tannins. Very good value."

  • Ian, Curious Wines Naas

Or "the one with the motorcycle on it" as some regulars call it. It has loads of dark fruit (plums, blackcurrant and blackberry) with very smooth tannins that make it so, so drinkable. Though I have it with everything from posh bangers and mash to the obligatory cheese board, I find it goes very with itself.
