Balthasar Ress ‘Von Unserm’ Riesling Trocken 2020

€23.75
Description
The standard bearer Riesling for the Ress family winery, fruit is taken from some of the best vineyards in the Rheingau, fermented in stainless steel and left to rest for 4 months before bottling.
This Rheingau Riesling presents itself in the glass with a light lemon-yellow colour, with fresh green aromas such as green apple, lychee and spring herbs on the nose. The structure on the palate is magnificent, a distinctive minerality and tightly wound acidity supporting layers of citrus, tropical and autumnal fruits, with a classically cool and zippy finish.
The term ‘von unserm’ (‘from us’) on the label here carries with it a 150-year-old back-story. Balthasar Ress opened an inn and restaurant in 1870 and grew grapevines as a sideline. He wanted to differentiate his own wines from the other wines on his menu and gave them the name ‘von meines’, meaning ‘from me’. Since then, every year a wine has been produced that bears this name and today it’s the standard bearer for that varietal from the Ress family winery.

Balthasar Ress set up Gasthof Ress, an inn and eatery in the idyllic village of Hattenheim on the Rhine river, in 1870, laying the foundation for a long gastronomic tradition as well as the family winery that fourth and fifth generation Stefan and Christian Ress manage today. It was Christian began the process of organic conversion of the vineyards in 2016, with over 50 hectares making Balthasar Ress the largest organic winery in the state of Hesse.
No other wine-growing region in the world is characterized by just one grape variety as much as the Rheingau by Riesling. So it is with Balthasar Ress, one of the few wineries that own vineyards in prestigious locations across the entire Rheingau, from Assmannshausen to Erbach. Riesling (90%) and Pinot Noir dominate the vineyards, producing world class wines while proudly protecting the flora and fauna that share the land. "We create fine Rieslings and fine Pinot Noirs for wine enthusiasts worldwide and always follow Balthasar's maxim: Fein Sei Der Wein!" (fine be the wine!). And so it is.
