A rich, rounded Merlot from the south-eastern Ardèche on the Rhône river.
Dark cherry red in colour, an initial sweet burst of fruit on the nose — raspberries, cherries and plum — is quickly backed up by savoury and spice elements, leather, tobacco leaf and even a hint of fruitcake. The palate is full and rich in dark fruit, blackberry and black cherry jam, with herbaceous elements and soft spice notes, firm tannins keeping everything in check and a fine acidity keeping it fresh and clean on the finish.
Apart from its diversity of terroirs, Ardèche is rich in preserved medieval villages, often perched on hilltops and fortified. The renowned cubist artist Sgarra brings these villages de caractère to life on the Ardèchois labels, each label characterising a different village. The illustration here represents the village of Balazuc, its church, its cliffs and its bridge spanning the Ardèche river.
